This PhD research combines the Cradle to Cradle design paradigm (McDonough & Braungart, 2002) and Sustainability Transitions (e.g. Grin et. al. 2010) together to relate and address beneficial thinking in area development processes. The framework for Beneficial Area Development supports a participatory process to develop urban areas that create more ecological, social and economic ‘benefits’ than they consume, on an increasing spatial scale. This research is funded by the Rotterdam Sustainability Initiative (RSI).   Supervisors: Prof. Dr. M.
